FOR THE WEEK OF MAY, 2010 9-16
WHAT I’M READING: RAPT by Winifred Gallagher—a book which discusses the notion of attention. It’s more psychological/scientifically based than self-helpy…if you’re interested but slightly concerned that I might be wooing you into that territory! And I am preparing to re-read Zadie Smith’s ON BEAUTY partly because my mother complimented me in a most delicious way by telling me one of my posts reminded her of Zadie’s quirky style. Now I need to devour that style with intention.
WHAT ELSIE’S READING: FREIGHT TRAIN by…by…I never look at the authors of children’s books. I confess. I absolutely confess. Do you know that book…by…by? You probably do if you’re a parent or you have nieces or nephews…or a little friend! Simon makes it a particularly entertaining read by punctuating the refrain with an energetic shout—his latent hip hop enthusiasm surging. Whenever I hear him yell “Freight train,” I think two things, 1) Wow, he’s a good Dad. 2) Man am I tired.
WHAT I’M WATCHING: The emails pouring into my inbox. Okay, not really. In fact that’s what I’m fighting watching ’cause the biggest obstacle to artistic pursuit that happens alone in a chair: reading and waiting for emails that you think might change your life and somehow ease the pain…of the aloneness…in the chair.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: Elsie’s voice. My dad brought her back a bear from England which he calls ‘Bobby.’ “Who’s that, Elsie?” “Bawbby!” she yells enthusiastically in a sweet half British—probably the cutest thing in the world.
WHAT I’M WEARING: Wide pants which I bought in LA…perfect for LA, but somehow here, in Toronto, they feel wrong. People don’t dress like wide-legged-breezy-beach-bum-pants in Toronto. Here we wear tight jeans and even tighter mini skirts. Oh, I’m also wearing vintage chartreuse sandals, which look a little bit like this. Mine don’t have the cool buckles or stitching, and now that I look more closely don’t resemble these at all except for the basic height and shape. But never mind.

WHAT I’M EATING: Raw food. I went on a raw food frenzy and made raw mango bread and raw caesar dressing and raw porridge and raw granola. Now I’m slightly exhausted (so is my food processor) and craving things that spend a lot of time in the oven.
WHAT I’M ENJOYING: Elsie’s new words which are many: running, farting, burping, spinning, jumping…we speak in verbs. Yesterday we got her to say ‘Almond Breeze,’ which is not a verb. Again I say, never mind. This isn’t an essay.
WHAT I’M SNIFFING: The Armani scents we were lured into smelling at The Bay. The saleswoman was actually very charming and I was prepared to buy on the spot. Somehow my honey scent melting into Simon’s musk seemed necessary.

I’m familiar with the siren song of the new mail (or message or RSS item etc.) notification beep.
But as I have no artistic pursuits, it’s not such a problem for me.
Go, sirens, go!
yes, familiar with e-mail aloneness in a chair…
i also own wide leg breezy bohemian pants and wear them all the time here…despite being outed by all of the skinnies and leggings! as my sister borrowed my pair while she’s in banglades, rock those pants becca for both of us!
oops–Bangladesh*
I love these Rebecca.
i miss doing these with you
what i’m reading: i am devouring books of late. currently enraptured with: echoholic home by adria vasil. (see how i used “rapt” in that sentence?) the book has changed my life. in a similar way to how “that” video (meet your meat) changed my life. i cant help but thinking how incredibily thoroughly we as humans are failing. sigh. i am also engrossed in my new vegan cookbooks: “the vegan cook’s bible” and “veganomicon” and “refresh”.
what i’m watching: ollie enjoying the gloriousness that is having our own huge back yard in the summer. EVERY time he goes outside and bounds and leaps across the lawn like the happiest little puppy in puppyvile. it makes me smile everytime.
what i’m listening to: the sound of traffic on the corner of wellington and university outside my office window. i am desperately missing the sound of the waves lapping at the beach.
what i’m wearing: sadly not my bikini any longer. first week back after a holiday sucks.
what i’m eating: actually i’m struggling with that choice right now. i forgot my lunch and vegan options in the food court are few and far between.
what i’m ejoying: watching my debt disappear. i got tough with myself and i’ve paid off two of my credit cards in the past few months. the third one should be paid off by the end of the summer.
what i’m sniffing: hopefully my lunch soon.
