I cut Elsie’s hair. Yes I did. Totally unceremoniously with big blue kitchen scissors. No pre-measuring or combing…just a big ‘ol snip accomplished in a moment.

The effect was surprisingly drastic.

I feel like a bad mother. Why didn’t I get the video camera and make cupcakes for the event? I don’t know. I was just compelled. She was sitting there. I saw the little lock in her eyes, and something just came over me. I didn’t think. I just grabbed the little lock and snipped.

She didn’t cry and neither did I. We just went on with our living. But now a few days later I’m feeling a little sad. Maybe ’cause I wasn’t intentional about the event. And Simon being ‘surprised’ didn’t help. And then all the people saying ‘Why did you cut her hair?’ didn’t help either.

Oh world! I’m impetuous.

I’m sure it’s good for something.

the first snip!

Fortunately everybody can still smile, despite the grotesquely uneven baby bangs.

I may be under-sentimental these days, but I think it’s fine to be spontaneous with the haircuts. It grows back, she’ll get plenty more over a lifetime, and she still looks sweet.

the first cut is emotional and now it’s like GRABBING the moment when I think he’ll tolerate a few snips…finally a few months later the job is almost complete.( ; Whether it looks good or not doesn’t have anything to do with the sense of accomplishment in cutting a very independent and constantly moving toddler’s hair. E’s lucky his ears are in one piece! teeeehee

next time, why don’t you just leave some insoluble art supplies lying around- then you can just use a shaver. And you have an excuse…

btw, if you use a vacuum with the baseboard attachment and a little product, you could suck those uneven bangs right up into a fauxhawk…..
