Funny thing happened to me in Shoppers Drug Mart! Or not funny at all depending on how one views being harassed by the woman trying to sign you up for a Shoppers Drug Mart credit card.

Certainly material for a stand-up routine, if you’re willing to admit that you would submit to such tedium, not to mention the potential melt-down of your 18 month old for a $25 dollar gift card. I wouldn’t be willing to admit to such things. No, I’m far too private. I keep the details of my life hidden away in a vault…blog-vault.

Anyhoo…

Is it funnier if I mention that I had bags of produce hanging precariously off my umbrella stroller and that when I pulled Elsie out of the stroller because she was getting impatient, the stroller toppled and my produce went flying in every direction at which point the woman with the clipboard ceased to fill in my application in order to help, all the while exclaiming, “Oh no! Oh no! Oh no!”?

It was a scene.

Or is it funnier if you know that the woman filling out the application filled in said application at the speed of snails crossing a canyon claiming that it had to be her handwriting. And then when she accidentally put our income down as $200,000, she was even more apologetic.

“I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry!”

‘For what precisely are you so sorry?’ I wanted to yell. Because you made a mistake or because our income is not in fact $200,000? Your ‘sorry’ is ambiguous. (I was kind of in the mood for yelling at that point. For that matter, so was Elsie. Unfortunately for me, I had to do my yelling internally doing massive damage to my internal parts. Elsie, on the other hand, pretty much had her way.)

The question is then, is any of this funny?

Funny? Or not funny?

Funny. When in doubt, always go with funny.

(On a related note: if you’re not sure if something is a compliment or not, take it as a compliment, which may be the right thing anyway, and will tick off the other person if they were trying to insult you. Win-win.)

True enough. I think I’ll adopt that has a life practice – when in doubt – laugh, ’cause it’s funny.
