Sitting in my local Second Cup, and by local, I do mean local. This Second Cup is just up the street from where I went to highschool. Actually when I was in high school there was no Second Cup. But now there this, and all the cute highschoolers come here and hold hands. At least here they hold hands. Let’s just pretend that’s all they do? ‘Cause now that I’m a mother, I prefer to imagine lots of innocence…like titillated teenagers drinking milk and cookies.
Right now there’s a couple sitting across from me. They are very intense, staring right into each other’s eyes. Okay, she’s slightly more intense than he is, but he’s nonetheless present. They’re both in expensive looking clothes, which they have modified into ‘worn pyjamas.’
What strikes me today is how basically they just want to be in each other’s company and rest their heads on each other’s shoulder. (Which I guess is what I want to do most of the time with Simon. When I’m in my right mind and not freaking out about money and careers etc. etc. etc.)
Basically we all just want a pair of eyes to stare into and feel a little excited. Yeah? So despite the fact that they have fancy boots and zero money cares, they fundamentally want the same things as the guy who wants to wash my windshield for loose change. Good company.
Interesting.

“nonetheless present” – priceless! And so very true.
