This is a departure for the Kids in the Hall for sure. They have always been known for their frenetic sketch format. But they are also masters of character, and this show shows that strength in full form- they are populating an entire town with just the 5 of them – pretty impressive-.
As to wheather that makes it funny is up to the eye beholding it, they have knack for the perverse and slightly off kilter, which makes a lot of people uncomfortable. I welcome anything that betrays our comfort with the status quo, re: Air Farce, this hour has…., Corner gas. These are not intrinsically unfunny, but they are NOT challenging and therefore, to me, not as interesting. The Kids in the Hall are still doing it!
Example lines from episode one of WDCTT : “Then you gained all that weight”
“I had a baby”
“He was adopted”
“It was sympathy weight”.
This just begs to be deconstructed, her excuse is the adopted baby so the sympathy is obviously for herself: weird+funny.
