FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 18-24, 2009

WHAT I’M READING: The Possession saga continues. It’s a very long book, and like I have said repeatedly my attention span is short—a statement which irritates some mothers. Why degrade our kind with this ‘mommy brain’ talk? I say accept what is true. Our brains have slipped. There are consequences to never moving into REM sleep, you know, the restorative kind, where our brain cells coalesce. Disclaimer: All facts on this site must be verified through your own research. I don’t actually know anything about REM sleep or how it’s spelled. I can only speak from own state of my personal chaos…positive personal chaos!

WHAT ELSIE’S READING: French books from the library. Elsie is particularly infatuated with the bus book…first we pick up the fairy (la fée) and then the doctor (le docteur) and finally the astronaute (l’astronaute). The astronaute is the last to board. No one said life was fair, buddy. Oh right. I also yell ‘VROUM, VROUM’ in between ‘boardings’ with an impeccable French accent, which is especially thrilling.

WHAT I’M WATCHING: The Food Network. I have finally been converted thanks to my sister, The Food Network goddess. Thank you, television which presents amazingly complex recipes that my sister is inclined to prepare for her family. Yesterday we consumed a pulled pork and yam stew followed by poached pears in ‘spices.’ I love ambiguous and delicately combined ‘spices.’ So does Elsie. She had a bite of pear and literally squealed ‘yuuummm!’

I, on the other hand, am more drawn to this show about crazy theme cakes. Yesterday they built an enormous squid-like-monster-grotesque-like-thing-which-doubles-in-size-every-time-you-bang-on-its-head-cake. It was fascinating. And inspiring.

Which is why I have declared today to be cake day. Baking six cakes and then carving them into shapes day. Elsie and I ‘visioned’ a toilet paper roll cake before her morning nap. I am so on!

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: An interesting radio interview about how not-from-concentrate orange juice is actually stored in vats and flavoured with ‘flavour packs.’ It’s not actually squeezed directly into the container like I always thought! Boo. Hoo. On a positive note (Damn, she’s positive!), I will now save oodles of money as I boldly snub Tropicana and opt for the cheap ‘from concentrate’ kind instead.

WHAT I’M WEARING: My violet ‘OKAY’ robe with a mismatched belt. Simon calls it my ‘OKAY’ robe because the DKNY letters are all squashed together and look like ‘OKAY.’ This is my first ever above the knee robe. Usually I walk around the house in a hundred feet of terry cloth fabric and a princess veil over my face. Look at me taking the risks and showing the leg.

WHAT I’M EATING: Breakfast at night. I love breakfast at night. I love breakfast. Period. So breakfast at night? Well, my body does cart wheels of joy and thanks. Pancakes! Eggs! Tropicana OJ! Oh, right, I gave that up. Breakfast at night will never be the same.

WHAT I’M ENJOYING: My new pillow. For some reason it had failed to enter my brain that I could actually go out and purchase a new pillow. I didn’t have to sleep on a disintegrated piece of foam forever. Thank you, revelation.

WHAT I’M SNIFFING: Pillow pesticides?

What I’m reading: The Commercial Real Estate Revolution. Actually, I read the front cover, and then I read the back cover. When I’m feeling particularly motivated I read the inside flaps. The furthest I’ve made it is the table of contents. It’s a book I “have to read for work”.

What I’m watching: my bank account hovering dangerously just above the panic level.

What I’m listening to: Saturday was goregous and crisp and sunny and I rediscovered the group “Air” and blasted that all morning while I cleaned my house.

What I’m wearing: Fall clothes! I love fall clothes. It is taking every once of energy I have to not buy an entire new wardrobe of fall clothes! See above “what I’m watching…”

What I’m eating: Too many of those little Starbucks Protein packs for WAY too much money. I could make them at home for 1/8 the price.

What I’m enjoying: The idea of being an auntie again to little “Benjamin” who should arrive in January!

What I’m sniffing: Cool Crisp Autumn Lake Air
