I had to glue feathers on our bird prop this morning. I could not not do it. I could not show up at rehearsal without the bird. Making the bird feathered was my job. Creating the bird out of Model Magic was her job. I can’t even imagine.

Though I could put the task off ’till the last possible minute. And I did.

Why all the fuss?

Let me be frank. I suck at crafts. I suck at feather glueing, and bracelet making and basket weaving. It’s a weakness. It’s also a hang-up I carry around. On my back. And oh how it’s heavy.

But whatever, I did it. Even though I felt incompetent and hoser-like (I wouldn’t have known I felt like a hoser until the thesaurus put it into words for me). Even though I cursed my fingers the whole time. Even though I tried to send pitiful glances in the direction of the one who is skilled with his hands. Even though…

And now it’s done.

The bird is appropriately feathered. Though supremely unattractive. Now I am going for a nap to recover from my mediocrity.

p.s. The bird in the photo was feathered by someone else. My bird refused to be photographed.
