On a whim I order an espresso.
Simon is visibly turned on.
He can’t hold back.
First sip will probably be bitter because of the crema. Usually you try and do it in three sips.
Oh man, all these rules.
Fine, do it in one.
He misunderstands.
No. Maybe I’ll do it in one or maybe I’ll do it in five or maybe I’ll do it in twenty-give. Just bugger off, Espresso Freak.
He is unphased by my name-calling. His gaze rests firmly on my little cup.
Okay, the next one will mix the brightness with the mids. When the mids roll over the tongue, it consumes the taste buds.
Pardon?
Yeah, there is an overpowering of the taste buds—all velvety, syrupy….
I take another sip.
You should roll it around in your mouth.
You should get a job.
Normally that would sting. But he is so excited about my last sip, he is not even listening to my jabs.
The last sip is your sweetest. If it has a deep note, that’s where you’ll find it—the caramel, the chocolate.
I take my last sip. I did it in three.
He is pleased.
So…how was your espresso, Wife?
Busy.

I laughed, laughed out loud at that. Sorry didn’t want to use the LOL as I am getting tired of the short changed language that our wonderful youth use.
Loved the analogy of the one, two and three step. Never knew that about drinking it but then never had espresso before either. Had Turkish coffee once, serve by a Syrian friend of ours. That was interesting, had the same viscosity of oil.
Had an Italian Roast coffee today in the lunch with the presidents executive assistant. She even used her own french press which she brought from home. Now that was good, I saw it breathe with it’s little foam bubbles churning in the edge of the filter. Watching the darkness filter down and move the aroma to the top. Now the smell starts as the coffee is soaking in, earthy smells of all things good. Life and growth combine to produce the plant that grew the beans just for you to consume in only a few moments of waiting. Finally it is ready and Jennifer pushes the plunger that separates the grounds from the liquid liquor that waits to be consumed. Pouring it into my waiting mug, I notice the different levels of richness that combine to produce a blackness that draws you in deeper and deeper. I lift the mug and smell instantly transported to the Italian alps where the beans were first roasted with the mixture that created this one beautiful cup of coffee.
Sorry, really lost myself there. Liked the busyness that you experienced. Let me know what happens when you have a second one.
