Simon is dancing Elsie to sleep while I sit here contemplating my new president. Okay, yours too, Elsie Melsie Pelsie.

I missed the live inaugural coverage, but am making up for it by watching five hours of coverage tonight. Anderson Cooper has promised to provide me with the full emotion of the day. I imagine all the good things Barak Obama will do and I’m adrenalized (that’s actually a word). We’re choosing hope over fear and that’s a very good thing. I almost feel like hopping in our car and driving back to America for his first hundred days in office.

Or maybe I’ll join Democrats Abroad. I heard about them on CBC. One or the other.

Sleep, my darling, Elsie. Your bucketful of protest bubbles is full. Tomorrow, the world will still be here. And some of us are thinking it might even be a better world. The whole unclenched fist thing…seems…um…positive.

One last snuggle. Sleep tight and dream big. It’s allowed now.

Not to mention I will give you a full run down of the First Lady’s ball gown first thing. I for one liked the thick strap. Props, Jason Wu.

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions – who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

Remember also little Elsie the promise has been said and it is not only in the hands of one man but in the hands of an entire generation. For you this promise will be your reward to come.
