For the week of December 4-10:

WHAT I’M READING: You’re probably surprised, but I haven’t quite finished Portrait of a Lady. Somehow I thought I would get more read while Elsie was napping. Wait. What are naps?

WHAT SIMON’S READING:
One hundred books in one year. I’m like, Si, that’s 8.3 books a month. What will The Girl be doing while The Husband is merrily reading 8.3 books? Maybe caring for THE DAUGHTER? Um…someone’s tired. Yes, it’s true. Someone is tired. ‘Cause in a more elevated state, I would be celebrating Simon’s sudden passion for books! Fine. Can I help you choose?

WHAT I’M WATCHING:
Elsie’s drool. Dripping.

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: Glenn Gould’s Goldberg Variations. Gould’s audible mutterings are strangely moving. Sigh and then sigh again. I really miss playing the piano. I think I’ll cry now.

WHAT I’M WEARING: You know the jean shorts I’ve been wearing everyday for the last three months? Well, the zipper is officially giving out. In fact, it seems I have been walking around with my fly open for quite some time now. Excuse me, Riverside, for my indiscretion. Let’s shift our attention to the baby.

WHAT I’M EATING:
Lundberg Brown Rice Chips. New flavor: Sante Fe Barbecue. Isn’t that exciting? I should also add I made my own tomato sauce and sweetened it with agave. I am still beaming at my own brilliance!

WHAT I WISH I WERE EATING: I think this category emerged during my pregnancy and since I am no longer pregnant I’m thinking of striking it from the record. I’m already quite familiar with the ‘ol gnawing dissatisfaction that haunts the belly. One of my great weaknesses. I don’t need any more encouragement in that direction. What I do need is a category that promotes embracing the present!

soooo….

WHAT I’M ENJOYING: Weighing apple boxes with Simon as we prepare to ship our stuff to Toronto. At midnight. Simon started out all chippy because he was tired from writing a thesis (I don’t understand), but then guesstimated the weight of a box exactly and was suddenly gleeful. Thirty-eight pounds if you must know. And I was happy ’cause he was happy. And isn’t that how life goes sometimes?

WHAT I’M SNIFFING: Yesterday, Riverside smelled like farm. It was very confusing for everybody.

Whenever we drive in the country it always seems to be in either the spring or the fall. The wonderfulness of the experience I tell my wife (I can say that now officially and not say the quasi-pc thing like partner) is the smells. There is a great smell of green that I am starting to miss as the cold comes in, but I digress, lets just say green has a great smell. Now every so often we come across a farm that has just been spread with manure. Now what smells like shit to one person smells like growing and raising of animals to another. So we drive and bam all the windows go up, while mine stays down. All the city people start yewing and holding their noses then yell at me to close my window. Reluctantly I do but before I do I have that brief memory of being at my grandfathers place and going with him or my cousin or my father while we visit farms while delivering feed for the stock. These are not bad smells that I remember but natural parts of farm life.

So now I wonder what does a California farm smell like?

Actually it is kind of intriguing to walk out of one’s apartment on to a concrete sidewalk and smell farm…maybe it’s fantabulous after all. It’s a reminder that we’re a universe made up of creatures – not just computer screens -

Heh, I don’t need to be pregnant to come up with a What I Wish I Were Eating category, unfortunately.
