During my sister’s recent visit to Riverside we talked about writing back and forth on a theme. Here are the beginnings of our dialogue with Chevron’s own “sisters.”

She’s only a month old and I already see a little bit of me in that sweet baby whose best colour is pink! She and I eat with gusto, hyper-focused on the food in front of us, stopping only to take the odd breath. Elsie and I both love to be held – desire to feel safe. And when Becca speaks, we both turn in the direction of her voice…at least Elsie is starting to. I always have.

The last three days were routine-filled, determined by Elsie’s insatiable hunger and the sisters’ equally insatiable need for coffee. Heading in the direction of organic, brewed by the cup coffee, Bec and I would walk along the Riverside street where things end up smashed (one day the TV at the side of the road was up for grabs, the next it had moved two feet and no longer had a screen, glass now littering the otherwise scenic street); Elsie, securely slung across my little sister’s chest, me – needing to fix – untwisting the sling straps as we walk, and Becca, asking questions that we have answered time after time. As we gingerly step over the broken television I say, “Funny that we can have this conversation AGAIN but this time with mountains in the background!” Our repeated conversations have slightly altered endings depending on the mountains, the landscape of our similar or separate geographical locations. And hearts.

As we grow, Elsie and I will continue to turn towards the sound of our Becca’s voice. Endings and beginnings of our ongoing conversations. Safe circles. Safe arms.

Funny how this little box says comments when anything I put down here seems more like observations.

    Observation number one.

If you take the outline of all three of your heads, where Nat joins Becca and Elsie is the focal point with her chin, you have the shape of a heart. (I will send you the picture of what I see.)

    Observation number two.

Aunts (and Uncles) always see themselves in their siblings children. Funny that as for some reason my nephew Bryon has developed a fascination for superheros, which I have but my brother thinks is silly fantasy.

    Observation … Final.

A conversation is never over until the answer is found. Even then it is sometimes nice to have the discussion again because of who you are having it with.
