Dear Elsie,

Mama loves breakfast. I hope you will love it too, and we will have lots of intimate brunches together. Daddy will make us amaranth pancakes, and I will read us breakfast poetry. I will have to read pretty loud, ’cause Daddy and I like to blare Lucinda Williams or Kathleen Edwards over break. But you don’t need to be frightened by my booming theatrical voice.

We might do a plum series, thanks to Grandma’s recommendation.

This Is Just to Say
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

by William Carlos Williams

Maybe you will prefer original pieces in which you are at the center. I’m all for original. But they might not be quite as poetic. Like, Daddy and I will probably try and string some words together before he makes the batter… “Elsie Cat, Elsie Cat, are you cat or a kitten? What makes you purrrrrrrrrrr?”

Right, well, I think they can only get better from here on in. So be encouraged.

‘Cause anyway, if we’re good parents, we’ll prioritize meal time, and who says it has to be dinner? Mama says break!

On other matters, would you consider giving me a hint as to when you might want to make your entrance? I believe you’re fully cooked. Like perfectly grilled breakfast sausage. Or if you’re in LA for brunch among the vegan crowd, tempeh sausage. Also nice. I’m trying to be patient. But see, Kitten, I don’t sleep very well, and I figure if I’m not sleeping anyway, I might as well have my Elsie Cat beside me keeping me company in the wee hours…

Daddy’s drool is not SO comforting!

Love love, Mama
