Oh, I just made myself a kick-ass cup of coffee! Yummmmmmmm! And no judging barista in sight! Further exclamation of delight.

I highly recommend the French Press method if you’re interested, and really good beans. I’m using Black Cat Espresso Blend from Intelligentsia. This cafe in LA sells beans bought through direct trade (money direct to farmer – so farmers actually fair better than in FAIR TRADE).

Kick-ass, eh Elsie?

Today’s post needed an ‘eh,’ a hail to my Canadian roots. Yesterday in my film class, it was revealed that I had said ‘house’ the CANADIAN way. ‘House’ and ‘about’ always trip me up. And if like me, you are seeking employment in American media, you will need to do something about your ‘house’ and ‘about’ too! Open the mouth and think down. Simon says it’s basically ‘Southern,’ just not as pronounced. I prefer to go back and study my vowel shift hand-outs…

Simon’s actually better at accents, yet I am the one that labored my way through theatre school. Is that fair?

The notion of ‘fair’ has also tripped me up throughout my life. Fair, equal, everyone having their fair-share, namely me. One Christmas I even unwrapped (and then re-wrapped) all the presents just to be sure. It was a burden. This conviction of ‘fair.’

Elsie, you’re a kick-ass kid with oodles of insight. What do you think about fair trade, fairness, unfair, fair dinkum, fair and square?

Fine, I’ll ask Sassy.

I was at a gaming convention in Milwaukee (total geekhood popping here) and ran into a guy from Chicago who knew immediately that I was from Canada. Apparently it is the hoose and aboot way of saying things that trips us up. As one supply teacher put it when I commented on her real cool Scottish accent, “Accent? Your all the ones with bloody accent!”

Intelligentsia is great coffee! I actually wrote an entire paper on direct trade as opposed to fair and used Intelligentsia as an example for one of my environmental ethics classes. They sell it at Manic in TO too. Enjoy your beans Becca!

People at the firm I worked at in Seattle often told me that my house and about sounded different too. I never believed them. I suppose they weren’t pointing it out for nothing…
