Dear Elsie,

Auntie Heather is here for a visit and we’ve been talking parenting. Be assured that she is quite confident I will make a good mother. I am equally sure I will mess you up just a little…though for the life of me I can’t quite figure out how! I’m wracking my brain…maybe I won’t let you draw on the walls which will stifle your creativity. Maybe I will be so busy writing about you that I will forget to feed you and you will suffer neglect. Maybe I will insist on matching mother/daughter outfits…

If my potential mothering neuroticism scares you, know that it is all rooted in love. But love is a strange bird, manifesting itself in strange ways. Like just yesterday, I sang to you for sixty minutes all the way home from LA – the central lyrics being something along the lines of: “Dum, dum, dum…the blessing of Elsie, da, dum, dum…the blessing of Elsie.” Sparse, yet fervent. I was quite moved and I think so were you. A work of art sung between stints of California Public Radio and random Christian Radio checks (once in a while I like to turn to the ‘Uplifting Family Station’ and see what gives – I’m like a rubber band being stretched from both ends.). So you can see I’m already loving you!

Sometimes I even pretend you’re already there in the back seat. I reach back and imagine grabbing your little leg or foot. You gurgle at me or speak a complete sentence at a startlingly young age, and we are perfect companions. Auntie Heather thinks maybe I’m just starved for company since I spend so much time in the car. Maybe. The guy swerving like a drunkard in the big white Suburban certainly isn’t good company.

Okay, that’s all for now. Your mama is tired and really, really hot. We are in desperate need of a fan. I need to go stun your daddy and Auntie out of their MAC reverie.

Love love, Mama

No, no, no. You have brought another evil malicious MAC person into your household. Just look at the twin glares of despair that they are trying to project unto the world. They think that they can’t be caught because people are taken with their *cute* neon strength apple symbols. But I tell you look behind the curtain and see the great wizard of OZ as they are truly meant to be seen.

: ) Say hi to Heather for me well ya, eh?
